The process we use for measuring external thread length is as follows:

! D, J1 s$ {$ i1. Measure the pitch diameter for the entire length of the threaded component with a ring gauge to ensure it is within spec. $ z/ w' a6 W2 F1 Y+ h

2. With an optical comparator, measure the reference surface to the furthest "measurable" basic pitch diameter away from the reference surface. Take the measurement from the flank opposite the reference surface as shown in the figure below.
